[Setting: Classroom. Neat rows of desks. Two doors on the upstage wall, one at stage left and one at stage right, both closed. MRS BITTY sits at her desk in front of the stage left door, poring over some papers. CLOCK hangs on the wall at center stage, reading 7:55.]
(THOMAS enters room through stage right door with a PAPER in his hand. He looks around and sees MRS BITTY sitting at her desk. He approaches.)
THOMAS: Good morning, Mrs. Bitty!
BITTY: glances up from her papers — Oh! Good morning, Thomas! How are you?
THOMAS: Good. — then, unsuredly — Do you have a few minutes?
BITTY: Sure, Thomas! Come on over. — gestures with hand
(THOMAS walks toward the DESK.)
THOMAS: Could you look over my paper and let me know what I can do to improve it? — looks at CLOCK — I can come back later to pick it up.
BITTY: Sure! — THOMAS hands the PAPER to MRS BITTY. BITTY glances at it, picks up a RED PEN and writes "A+" at the top, then hands it back to THOMAS. — I love the way you write, Thomas!
MRS BITTY looks back down to her work. THOMAS starts to walk toward the stage right door. As he walks, the lights dim, leaving a spotlight on him. He stops walking abruptly.)
THOMAS: (aside) She didn't even read it…
